GENERAL ADVANTAGES OF THE PROCESS

Selective laser melting and selective electron beam melting (SLM, SEBM) are powder-based processes for manufacturing parts layer by layer. Fully dense metal components with complex geometry can be produced without tools directly from CAD models. Corresponding production costs are independent from the complexity of the components and the lot size.

  • Design freedom and functional integration (manufacturing process without tools/moulds)
  • Improved material properties (rapid solidification, fine microstructure, porosity < 0.3%)
  • Efficient use of raw material (excess material can be fed back into the cycle)
  • Reduced lead times (components produced directly from CAD data)

RESEARCH

Processing various materials (e.g. nickel-based superalloys, aluminium alloys, titanium aluminides), knowledge about specific process parameter is required. We are focusing on the interrelation between process parameters (e.g. scan speed, focus, beam power) and material properties (e.g. porosity, misconnection, mechanical properties) in order to identify optimized process parameter for each material. This research is provided by experiments and computer-assisted optimization tools.
