MIMCuT research project: Near-net-shape manufacture of carbide cutting tools directly from powder

MIMCuT
The MIMCuT research project is investigating the application of MIM (metal injection moulding) technology to the manufacture of cutting tools made from tungsten carbide-cobalt cemented carbides, with the aim of achieving material savings. The use of powder-based feedstock systems enables near-net-shape manufacturing, which, due to the reduced need for post-processing, represents a material-saving production method compared with the current state of the art.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) is funding the MIMCuT project for two and a half years as part of the 8th Energy Research Programme (funding reference 03EI5044B). Together with its project partners Schunk Präzisionswerkzeuge GmbH, Johann Hoefer & Sohn GmbH & Co. KG, MTU Maintenance Hannover GmbH and the Chair of Environmentally Sound Production Technology at the University of Bayreuth, Neue Materialien Fürth GmbH is conducting research into the necessary materials and process technology.
